Ole Miss Basketball: Rebels finish regular season with home win

Coach Kermit Davis and the Rebels closed out the 2020-21 Ole Miss basketball regular season with a 56-46 home win over Vanderbilt.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball were back in action Saturday night as they closed out the regular season against the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Rebels were able to take advantage of the home-court in the second meeting with the Dores in just a week. The Dores topped the Rebels 75-70 in Nashville last weekend.

The Ole Miss Rebels (15-10, 10-8) entered the Saturday night rematch coming off a 70-62 home win over Kentucky. The Vanderbilt Commodores (8-15, 3-13) Dores entered The Pavilion coming off a 78-64 non-conference road win at Cincinnati. The Rebels needed to avoid a season sweep to the Dores and keep the momentum entering the SEC Tourney that begins this week. OHT looks at the Rebels’ win by the numbers.

As a team, the Rebels shot 42.9% or 21 of 49 from the field while Vandy hit 15 of 41 or 36.6% of their shots from the field. From three-point range, the Rebels were 5 of 14 or 35.7%.

Vandy was 6 of 22 or 27.3% from beyond the arc. From the free-throw line, the Rebels shot 9 of 14 or 64.3% while Vandy shot 10 of 15 or 66.7% from the charity stripe.

Vandy committed 16 turnovers to which the Rebels converted 13 points. Ole Miss also committed 16 turnovers to which the Dores converted only 10 points from.

The Rebels outrebounded the Dores 34-24 while posting 9 second-chance points on 10 offensive boards. Vandy had no second-chance points on 4 offensive rebounds. Vandy’s bench was responsible for 18 points while the Rebels’ bench added 16 points.

The Rebels had two players score in double-digits against Vandy. Leading all Rebels was Jarkel Joiner with 15 points. Joiner also had 1 steal, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds. Next up was Romello White who had 11 points. White added 1 steal, 2 blocked shots, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds.

Off the Ole Miss bench, Matthew Murrell contributed with 8 points as well as having 2 steals, 1 assist, and 4 boards. Starter Luis Rodriguez followed with 7 points, 3 steals, 1 assist, and 8 rebounds. Devontae Shuler had 5 points and 1 rebound.

Robert Allen and Austin Crowley each added 3 points. Allen had 1 blocked shot, 2 assists, and 5 rebounds. Crowley had 2 rebounds. KJ Buffen and Sammy Hunter rounded out the scoring for the Rebels with 2 points each. Hunter had 1 steal, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball will be back in action Thursday evening at the SEC Tourney. The number 6 seed Rebels will face off against the number 11 seed South Carolina Gamecocks (6-14, 4-11). Tipoff from Nashville is set for 8:00 pm CT and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.
