There has been a drought in Starkville which has been going on almost ten years. Since former MSU head coach Sylvester Croom defeated Alabama back to back there have been no wins against the Tide. Dan Mullen has been in Starkville waiting for his win against the Tide and this could be the Bullies season.
Miss State is returning 7 starters and 6 on defense. Offensively, Mullen has one of the most talented quarterbacks in the SEC in Nick Fitzgerald. Since Mullen has been in Starkville, the Bullies have had great QB play.
Because of Mullen’s association with Tim Tebow several of his QBs have been Tebow-esque. However, Fitzgerald is the closest comparison yet. Fitzgerald has the size of Tebow however he also has plenty of speed and agility to make any play a big play.
Don’t be lulled into believing MSU has no offensive weapons; they have plenty of talented play-makers. Fitzgerald was one of a number of SEC quarterbacks who recently attended the Manning Passing Academy. Nick Fitzgerald has made a noticeable attempt to improve his throwing mechanics.
Defensively, the Bulldogs are looking at a new DC with Todd Grantham stepping in earlier this year. Grantham is a really good defensive coordinator and has the athletes in Starkville to see the resurgence of the ‘Psycho Defense’. By the time this game rolls around, MSU’s defense will have already garnered the attention of the SEC. This game will leave Bama in shock as I expect the Bulldogs to take it in an upset.
