No.7 Vanderbilt Commodores (1-0)

More from Ole Miss Football

The Vanderbilt Commodores (1-0) played host to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (0-1). Vandy won the contest 35-7 despite only accumulating 346 yards of total offense, a 176 yards coming on the ground and 170 yards thru the air. The Dores defense allowed only 294 yards of Blue Raiders total offense with 116 allowed on the ground and 178 thru the air.

Derek Mason typically has a pretty good defense and the Dores will certainly continue to be a bother for opposing offenses. However, Vandy didn’t show enough in their season opener to be considered a higher ranking. The Dores offensive output was terrible for an SEC team against an inferior team. Vandy will host Nevada this Saturday in Nashville.

No.6 Tennessee Volunteers (0-1)

The Tennessee Volunteers (0-1) squared off with No.17 ranked West Virginia (1-0) in one of five Camper World Kickoffs in which the SEC competed. The Mountaineers and  All-American QB proved to be way too much for the Volunteers and West Virginia won 40-14. The Vols defense allowed 547 yards of Mountaineer total offense with 429 yards coming thru the air. West Virginia averaged 9.0 yards per play against the Vols defense.

The Vols mustered 301 yards of total offense with only 129 yards rushing and 172 yards passing going 5 of 14 on 3rd down conversions. Jeremy Pruitt is a great defensive mind and will figure out how to fix the mess in Tennessee but he couldn’t do it against West Virginia in week-one. We will watch to see if Tennessee can find its way on both sides of the ball before Pruitt begins to draw the ire of Vols fans. The Vols host East Tennessee State this Saturday in Knoxville.

No.5 Kentucky Wildcats (1-0)

The Kentucky Wildcats (1-0) faced the Central Michigan Chippewas (0-1) and despite a very close game early the Wildcats managed to pull out a 35-20 season opening win. Central Michigan is no slouch when it comes to football and gave Mark Stoops and the Wildcats fits early. Mark Stoops has been building a defensive juggernaut in Lexington and it showed Saturday in their win over Central Michigan.

The Wildcat defense allowed just 255 yards of total offense from Central Michigan. Stoops stingy defense gave up just 118 yards on the ground and 137 yards thru the air. The Kentucky defense is good but how good remains to be seen. The Wildcats offense put up 427 yards of total offense with 299 yards rushing yet only produced 128 yards passing. It’s obvious the Wildcats passing game has a way to go before they truly contend in the SEC East. Kentucky travels to Gainesville this Saturday to face No.25 Florida.
