Saturday night disheartened Ole Miss football fans watched as the No.1 Alabama Crimson Tide dismantled the Rebels in a blowout.

It was a rough SEC home opener for Ole Miss football as they hosted the No.1 Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday night. Although the Rebels got off to a fast start it did nothing to slow Bama down and the Tide dominated all but the first 11 seconds of the game and got a 62-7 blowout over the Rebels. The blowout loss was the first of the Rebels season but from the looks of things it won’t be the last.

It would be nice to look at the bright spots of the game but unfortunately there aren’t many to talk about. In fact there is little any bright spots could do to negate the embarrassing loss to the Tide Saturday night. The Ole Miss defense was terrible and the offense didn’t look like the offense we know they are capable of being. It is clear to Ole Miss fans this coaching staff did not have the Rebels prepared once again this week. Maybe they were looking ahead to Kent State.

After last week’s defensive meltdown and now after being beaten like a junior high team by Alabama we have heard a lot of complaining from Rebels fans. And yes, they have every right to complain. While we see the Ole Miss administration worry about on-field mascots, new uniform combinations and powder blue pom-poms they are avoiding the issue of what will actually put butts in the seats in the Vaught.

An Easy Solution

More from Ole Miss Football

Ole Miss fans really aren’t hard to satisfy. We do appreciate the work Ross Bjork has done while he has been AD. Sure, the ‘great white’ uniforms were cool and the blue pom-poms were a nice touch but not really what Rebels fans want. What we want is to see a competitive Ole Miss football team and we didn’t see it at all against the Crimson Tide and it looks as though we won’t see it against a few SEC teams this season.

It is a true shame to think we beat Bama two seasons in a row just a few seasons ago and in the last meetings we have been hammered by Saban and Bama to the tune of 128-10. This is totally unacceptable for the Ole Miss football program and everybody involved. While it would seem Ross Bjork was watching the same game we were last night he apparently has seen the Rebels coaching staff out-coached once again.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the first time we’ve seen this. There were numerous games last season we watched this same staff in way over their heads and it resulted in losses. So far we’ve seen them out-coached this season as well by a FCS coach for a half and then against Bama. The problem has nothing to do with us being mascots, uniforms and pom-poms. The problem lies within what Ross Bjork seemingly can’t rid.

The Player Talent Is There

Yes, the loss to Bama may have been expected by all the ‘experts’ as well as fans of both sides yet it does little to silence the Ole Miss football fans voices. In the heat of the moment fans have vented their frustrations. Many fans pointed out the problems within the defensive staff which surely exist but the problems the Rebels have defensively is not a result of the talent not being there. This team is very talented on both sides of the ball and unfortunately didn’t show itself much in the Bama game.

When you watch the defense you see players out of position and still trying to get set on defense when the ball is snapped. It clearly points to either the players not being prepared or the coaches not being prepared. It matters not how talented you are if you are out of position against a team like Bama. Saban and the Tide will make you pay and that is exactly what happened over and over again for the second year in a row. For this staff to have had this happen a year ago and know what was coming and still put forth this effort is totally inexcusable.

Right now Ole Miss football fans aren’t happy and as equally embarrassed by what we’ve seen from this coaching staff. We really expected to see a much better performance last night against Bama. Sure Bama has a truly great team but the Rebels failed to put forth the effort to even give Saban and Bama a challenge for the second year in a row. It is a shame to see a football team with this type of talent and fan support be willing to settle for mediocre coaches when they could cleary do better. Coach Matt Luke had better do something about it or there will be more embarrassing losses this season.
