Ole Miss Football: Grove Grinder, Well That Was Ugly Enough
Sometimes its just not easy being a diehard Ole Miss football fan which was the case Saturday night when the Rebels were blown out by No.1 Alabama.
Saturday night was a bad night to be a Ole Miss football fan. There are a number of ways we could describe the game and probably none would come close to the ‘punched in the gut’ feeling which most of us had. I’ll be the first to admit I believed Matt Luke and the Rebels would at least put up some kind of challenge for the Tide but it simply wasn’t the case. The Rebels were dominated by coach Nick Saban and the Tide to the tune of 62-7.
Naturally most of us expected the favored Crimson Tide to get the win but we expected to see improvement from the SIU game and it was absent. The Rebels offense was also stymied but there is only so much you can do against the Bama defense to begin with. While the Rebels drew first blood on the first offensive play of the game there was little they could do the rest of the game.
OHT likes to remain positive and doesn’t make it a habit of expressing our discontent. However this Grove Grinder we are going to discuss a few things which Ole Miss football fans have been displeased with. The fans thoughts and opinions should matter to the Ole Miss administration but in recent years we have noticed they really don’t.
The Problem

When you look at the Rebels football team their 2-1 record is very deceiving. Yes the Rebels defeated Texas Tech and Southern Illinois and lost to Alabama thus the 2-1 record. Wait a minute. We have a great offense and really weren’t expecting to beat Bama anyway is what many of you may be thinking. Yes you are correct. But as I said before the 2-1 record is deceiving when you look at the Rebels total season statistics.
So far thru three games the Rebels offense has put up 130 points and 1,440 yards of total offense with 948 yards coming thru the air and 492 yards on the ground. Not bad at all for the offense thru three games. Defensively the Rebels have given up 130 points and 1,631 yards to opposing offenses giving up 615 yards on the ground an 1,016 yards thru the air. This is absolutely inexcusable and not indicative of a SEC defense.
It is an absolute shame for coach Wesley McGriff to have the kind of talent he has on the defense and not have them physically and/or mentally prepared for the games they face. McGriff is a good coach but he has no business being a defensive coordinator in the SEC. I like Matt Luke and the staff but if Luke wants to stay off the hot seat in Oxford he needs to get rid of McGriff and give somebody else a shot with the defense. It’s very clear to Ole Miss fans and opposing offenses that McGriff is in way over his head and doesn’t know what he is doing.
In Closing
There are serious issues with the Ole Miss football program and it begins with Wesley McGriff on defense. There is no reason for Ole Miss football players or fans to have to settle for mediocrity when we could obviously do better. AD Ross Bjork and coach Matt Luke need to wake up and do whats best for the Ole Miss football program now. What is happening is destroying our season, jeopardizing players futures and eventually will cost the athletics department money when Ole Miss fans are tired of spending their money on a crap show. Ross and Luke had better start doing what is best for the Ole Miss football program. Hotty Toddy!
